The Federal Republic of Germany

Do I Need a Visa to Visit Germany?

Canadian citizens using Canadian passports do not require a visa to enter Germany for tourism or business stays under ninety (90) days.

Most other nationals will need a visa.

Non-Canadians must apply IN PERSON at the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa, or one of the various German Consulates across Canada, for the European Customs Treaty Zone visa. Visa seekers are advised that they must seek visas directly and in person from the embassy or consulate as they will be interviewed and fingerprinted and biometrically scanned

Non-Canadians must make an appointment directly with the appropriate embassy or consulate and attend the IN PERSON interview and fingerprinting. You must contact the consulate for the appointment. The consulate will tell you which documents to bring to your appointment.

Citizens of the following countries generally need an airport transit visa with which passengers are restricted to the secure boarding lounge: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Somalia, Congo, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Eritrea, Lebanon, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mali, South Sudan, Ghana, Myanmar, Syria, India, Nigeria, Turkey.

Foreigners with Canadian Permanent Resident cards and real valid foreign national passports (not Canadian refugee travel documents, or Certificates if Identity) can sometimes transit Germany without a visa. A transit stop in Germany only allows a short stay in the international transit area, neither leaving the airport's international transit area nor overnight stays are possible. The following travellers do not require an airport transit visa (even if they are citizens of a country mentioned in the list above):
- holders of a valid Canadian Permanent Resident Card
- holders of a valid Canadian visa
- travellers who leave Canada after having used a Canadian visa and still have legal status in Canada (Your status in Canada is legal until the date stamped in your passport when you entered Canada. If you have a work/study permit your status is legal until the permit expires.) -CHECK WITH YOUR AIRLINE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS TRANSIT

Germany is a signatory of the European Customs Agreement on border control and visa standardization.
